Uni vows to continue support for regional journalism

Central Queensland University has vowed to continue support for the vital role of regional journalism, despite trends towards news hubs in major centres.

The University has initiated pod-casting (radio webcasts) and vod-casting (video webcasts) to enable flexible delivery of broadcast journalism subjects.

CQU has also maintained the profile of journalism as a specialty option within the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Journalism lecturer Bruce Honeywill said that, while news hubs were creating efficiencies in the industry, there was still a strong need for local, on-the-spot reporters.

This need would continue, even as the Federal Government9s media law changes allowed more cross-media ownership.

CQU has developed a distinctly successful regional journalism program, thanks relationships with regional media," he said.

"We have had great support for work experience and internships, our tutors tend to be working journalists and our graduates are getting their foot in the door for relevant employment, with dozens employed throughout Queensland and Australia".

Students can study CQU journalism subjects from anywhere in Australia thanks to flexible delivery.
