Mackay academic edits prestigious international publication

CQUniversity's Dr Arun Patil, who is with the Mackay campus, has recently published a Springer book, Engineering Education Quality Assurance: A Global Perspective and has recently been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Quality Assurance in Engineering and Technology Education.

Dr Patil, originally from India, came to Australia on a UNESCO scholarship to pursue higher studies in engineering education with Monash University.

However, while undertaking his PhD dealing with accreditation and quality assurance in engineering education, he recognised the potential for a text focusing on those areas.

Dr Patil said, "While working at Monash, I drew upon the knowledge of a very good network of collaborators, colleagues, mentors and friends from all over the world."

Co-editor of Dr Patil's book, Professor Peter Gray, is Director of Academic Assessment with the United States Naval Academy, and the author with others, of related areas in quality assurance of engineering education. Dr Gray agreed a new ‘benchmarking' text was overdue.

Dr Patil said, "You can find some really relevant literature on quality assurance in higher education but, in terms of engineering, there is a paucity of such literature. The target audience for the book is not only engineers, but also associated stakeholders, even in higher education, because some of the case studies can have application to higher education fields in general."

The potential reach of the book extends to higher education accreditation programs, evaluation experts, scholars, educators and administrators, education standards auditing bodies, academic experts, graduate students and so on.

Dr. Patil said, "There are centres springing up around the world, dedicated to researching engineering education quality assurance. The book brings together foremost academics and professionals from 15 different countries to share their wealth of experience and insights."

Engineering Education Quality Assurance: A Global Perspective will be launched University-wide during Orientation Week next year.
