CQU hosts forensic science in-service day

Thirty science teachers from Rockhampton and district schools converged on CQU for an in-service training day on forensic science.

CQU forensic sciences lecturer Associate Professor Graham Pegg said that the new push for teaching forensic science in schools was a good idea since it allowed science to be taught within an interesting and relevant context.

"An analytical result which proves someone is innocent is just as important as one proving someone is guilty," he said.

Dr Pegg said that with the popularisation of the field through television dramas and documentaries, many students were interested in a career in forensic science these days.

"Recent surveys of heads of forensic laboratories across the world found that most prefer to hire broadly trained science graduates from fields such as chemistry, molecular biology or biomedical science, rather than from a specific undergraduate program in forensic science.

The forensic science in-service training day was made possible through coordination by Rockhampton High School Head of Science Rebecca Hack and St Brendan's College science teacher Chris Persson, with support from the CQ Science Teachers' Association.
