Schools can register for robotics challenge at Bundaberg campus

Wide Bay, Burnett and Bundaberg primary schools are being encouraged to register teams for a multi-faceted robotics challenge, to be held at CQUniversity Bundaberg on Friday, August 13.

Shontelle Lewis is coordinating the TREK (Teaching Robotics Education across Key learning areas) Robotics Challenge again this year.

Parents and teachers can contact Ms Lewis on 0424 124 826 for competition guidelines, applications and a schedule of events. She is also keen to hear from businesses who may be able to support this event.

Ms Lewis recently completed her Bachelor of Learning Management with CQUniversity and is now teaching at Gin Gin State High School.  She believes in using robotics as a vehicle for developing entrepreneurial, innovative and creative skills in primary students.

"Robotics is a passion of mine because I have seen it successfully used as a versatile tool for learning across the curriculum," Ms Lewis said.

"Children who fear risks and struggle with problems bloom into innovative thinkers right before my eyes!

"Children who think they are not 'technically minded' amaze themselves and each other with their spatial thinking and creativity.

"Girls and boys of any age relate to the learning because they use their own ideas and invention thought processes to create the most amazing products. They are going to be the revolution of the next generation."

Winning teams will help their school gain a NXT Lego Mindstorm robotics kit (valued at over $500), donated by sponsors Australian Microelectronics Centre. Four education resource sets (valued at over $150 each) are being provided as prizes by CQUniversity Bundaberg.
