CQU Mackay student wins 'Women in Technology' scholarship

CQU Bachelor of Information Technology student Crystal Gill has won the 2004 WIT Scholarship for Indigenous Women in Technology.

Crystal is in her first year of study at Central Queensland University and is “thrilled to receive the scholarship”, which includes 12 months' paid work experience with Brisbane City Council.

PhotoID:1414 Formed in 1997, Women in Technology (WIT) is a not-for-profit association for women working, studying or pursuing a career in the various fields of technology, including IT, Science and Engineering.

Following her application for the WIT Scholarship Program, Crystal was short listed and subjected to a panel interview where questions focused on her involvement with the indigenous community in Mackay and her achievements in technology.

Before starting her studies at CQU, Crystal completed a Certificate II in Information Technology and was awarded the Queensland Trainee of the Year Award for her work with the MRAEL Ltd group training company and Andergrove State School.

Crystal was flown to Brisbane in July to attend a Gala Dinner and Award Ceremony where it was announced that she was a scholarship winner.

On attending the ceremony Crystal said, “It was great to see I was not the only woman with aims of working in the male-dominated technology industry.".

“It was good to attend an event with so many prominent and accomplished women who are working in the fields of technology and I would strongly encourage other women to apply for the scholarship program,” she said.

Crystal is excited about her scholarship win and is looking forward to her 12 months of work experience with Brisbane City Council in 2005.

Although she admits the combination of work and study will be a challenge, Crystal will continue her studies with CQU next year on an external, part-time basis.

According to the WIT web site, the WIT Scholarship and Award Program has this year exceeded targets for regional participation with almost 50% of applications and 40% of finalists living in regional centres.
