Cyclone Beni passes through CQU territory

Rain and moderate wind gusts from Cyclone Beni put CQU staff on Red Alert this week.
The alert came as Beni hovered about 600km east of Mackay and threatened to move inland.
Acting Head of Mackay Campus Associate Professor Bruce Knight said CQU Emergency Procedures were implemented to ensure the safety of staff and students.
“Although the skies looked quite clear it is vital to follow procedures and not to become too complacent as cyclones are known for intensifying and causing a great deal of destruction,” he said.
Warnings were issued and staff were informed throughout the day about the cyclone’s strength and direction.
Staff were also affected by localised flooding in the Rockhampton district, with some of the roads into the city cut off.
