Privacy & Copyright Seminars starting Monday

Two very important topics will be the subject of Information Seminars scheduled next week at CQU.

Information privacy standards adopted last year by the Queensland Government applies to all Queensland public sector agencies including us.

Mr Roger Byrom, the Legal Officer from the University of Queensland, is coming to CQU Rockhampton on Monday and Tuesday, 11 and 12 November 2002, to conduct a series of seminars. On both days there will be a seminar on information privacy, freedom of information, and confidentiality in Building 29, Room G.05.

Vice-President and Registrar Ken Window encourages staff to attend those seminars. Contact Heather Rossiter on x2112 if you plan to attend.

The other is on Copyright privacy. Presentations and follow up sessions are scheduled 13 and14 November.

Staff is strongly urged to consider whether these sessions would be of benefit to them.

Ken Window says a number of issues are finding their way to the University Copyright Office, often repeated and causing unnecessary delays, which may have been avoided, had staff been better informed. For example, writing of curriculum around particular copyright material, only to have finalisation of print based or online materials delayed due to copyright issues.

With major changes to the Copyright Act (effective 2001) staff may also consider taking this opportunity to simply refresh/update their knowledge and understanding in areas that may be of particular relevance, like multimedia and publications.

“Feedback has indicated that some university staff may be refraining from accessing copyright material due to concern about compliance requirements, sometimes saying ‘it's all too hard,’ explains Ken.

This need not be the case at CQU.

Following an introduction by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Prof. Ron Davies, Copyright Presentations have been scheduled as follows:.
