Melbourne powerless but celebrates Sri Lanka's day

Despite a power blackout at the exact time of celebrations for Sri Lanka's Day of Independence, Sri Lankan students turned up to enjoy some Kiribath (a rice-milk dish) with staff of CQU Melbourne International Campus.
Sri Lankan-born staff member Gerald Bottoni led the assembled students (some of around 120 Sri Lankans based at the campus) in an emotional version of the Sri Lankan national anthem, made all the more stirring by being sung in the dark.
Tea and coffee along with the traditional dish Kiribath were served. Although a very simple Sinhalese recipe, Kiribath is also a very traditional one which is served throughout all of Sinhalese society.
