Male teacher support project shared

CQU Bundaberg has been piloting a program to attract and retain males in teaching called MATES (Male Teacher Support) .

Throughout the world, the numbers of male teachers particularly in primary schools is rapidly declining.

The MATES project is an initiative to encourage males (particularly school leavers) to consider teaching as a career and offers networking opportunities for teacher trainees.

MATES project co-ordinators Alan Bowmaker and Steve Smith recently attended a Building Teaching Quality Conference in Melbourne where they shared their project with educational authorites from throughout Australia and New Zealand.

"We were overwhelmed by the response from the conference participants who were very eager for us to implement the project in their institutions", Mr Bowmaker said.

The project will expand next year to other university campuses with the intention of eventually being implemented in all universities throughout Australia.
