Homestay visitors find Rockhampton among most tolerant communities

International students using the 'homestay' accommodation option while studying at Central Queensland University Language Centre are finding that Rockhampton is one of Australia's most hospitable and tolerant communities.
That is according to regular 'homestay mum' Michelle Hanlon (pictured with current Japanese visitor Yukako Kimura), who has hosted about 20 students from Japan, Korea and Thailand over the past two years.
Ms Hanlon said her 'homestay girls' found locals were very interested and keen to welcome them.
"Because we are not swamped with overseas tourists, Rockhampton people have become wonderful hosts for our visitors," she said.
Ms Hanlon said her homestay visitors were very trusting and reliant on her.
In return, she had become part of an extended homestay community, with a growing network of friends in Rockhampton and overseas.
"It's a very social experience. I get letters and parcels from my girls and we get very attached to each other in the short time they are around," she said.
"Despite our different cultures and religions, there is tolerance on both sides and it is a wonderful experience.
