Researchers take another look at 'who wears the pants'
Published on 23 September, 2009
CQUniversity researchers are taking another look at ‘who wears the pants', almost 40 years after gender role stereotypes were established to aid academic analysis.
Dr Joella Storey says it's important to reassess the Australian Sex-Role Scale which is based on perceptions of various ‘masculine' and ‘feminine' behaviours.
For example, men have been perceived as the competitive risk-takers who are unlikely to have health checks, while women have been perceived as nurturing and caring or nervous and timid.
These pre-conceptions have a bearing on planning for health and social interventions, so they may need to be challenged and updated.
Dr Storey and colleague Dr Vanessa Ghea will present their FREE public talk about the 'Current validity of the Australian Sex Role Scale (ASRS): Gender role orientation in the 21st century', from 1pm-2pm on Thursday October 1 at CQUniversity Rockhampton Building 33 Room G.22.
This event is brought to you by the Institute for Health and Social Science Research.
