Forum will discuss economic impacts of the mining industry

Timed to coincide with the Queensland Plan Summit in Mackay, Mark Ogge from The Australia Institute will discuss economic impacts of the mining expansion on other industries and examine the implications for the Mackay region.

The Australia Institute is an independent research organisation that has undertaken extensive research on this issue.

PhotoID:14628According to the Australia Institute, the benefits of the mining boom have been well publicised, but there has been little focus on its impact on other industries. The forum will discuss how the mining boom has created jobs in mining and some related industries, but has also crowded out businesses and jobs in other important industries, particularly manufacturing, tourism and agriculture.

The discussion will also talk about the impact on the Australian economy and the risks associated, particularly for regions like Mackay that have become more dependent on mining.

The presentation will be held on Friday, May 10 at 6pm in the Cook Lecture Theatre, CQUniversity Mackay, Boundary Road, Ooralea.
