CQU Chancellor Rennie Fritschy and Vice-Chancellor Professor John Rickard last week presented CQU benefactor Ron Diamond with a B-HERT (Business/Higher Education Round Table) High Commendation for outstanding philanthropic contribution to higher education.

A celebratory luncheon was held at CQU to formally present Mr Diamond with the award. CQU Development Manager Suzi Blair had received the award on Mr Diamond's behalf at an official B-HERT function in Sydney.

Celebrating this milestone with him was his wife Helen, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Angela Delves, Emeritus Professor Errol Payne, Sheila Jeffery, Senior Lecturer Biological Science [worked on the Central Highlands Science Centre project with Mr Diamond], Wendy Tinney, Administrator of the RJ Diamond Scholarship, CQU Development Office's Glenys Kirkwood, and Development Manager Suzi Blair.

B-HERT bestowed a High Commendation upon Mr Diamond, acknowledging his financial contributions to, and advocacy of, science education and community development at Central Queensland University.

In 2000, Mr Diamond, with his wife, Helen, established a $50,000 trust in the name of his late brother, Dr R J (Jim) Diamond, a distinguished physicist and mathematician, to help fund the Central Highlands Science Centre at Emerald. Those resources led to the establishment, in 2006, of the Robert James Diamond Science Scholarships which stimulate interest and achievement among disadvantaged young people in the sciences.

CQU Development Manager Suzi Blair described Mr Diamond's support as a testament to his love of knowledge, respect for a good education and astute understanding of how to extend a hand-up to people.

"Ron and Helen demonstrate, in a very personal way, the value of higher education and remind us that anyone can play an important role in the development of a student," said Ms Blair.
