COIN Internet Academy 'on the money'

Rockhampton's COIN Internet Academy is 'on the money' according to national agencies.

COIN, a project of Central Queensland University's Faculty of Informatics and Communication, is a 'community informatics' (local IT enabled networks) service based in the former Commonwealth Building in East Street.

Following a review of all Australian Universities, the COIN initiative has been selected for inclusion in the latest Compendium of Good Practice University - Regional Development Engagement Initiatives report prepared for the Department of Transport and Regional Services.

Meanwhile, COIN has been sponsored by the National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE), to work with a similar group at Monash University to coordinate the development of Australia's 'civil society' statement to the World Summit for the Information Society. The World Summit will be held in Geneva in December this year.

The 'civil society' statement will concentrate on the information needs of the non-government and non-commercial sectors of society.

COIN is a research based collaboration between the Faculty of Informatics and Communication (CQU), Rockhampton City Council and more than 85 community groups in the Rockhampton district.
