CQU Mackay launches Accounting Mentor Program

Central Queensland University Mackay has launched a mentor program for students studying Accountancy.

The Accounting Mentor Program is a first for CQU, and was recently launched by the Program Coordinator and Sub Dean of Business and Law, Ms Jo Luck.

Ms Luck said 17 students currently studying the Accounting Degree and the Accounting/Information Systems Degree at the Mackay campus have been accepted into the program which will normally run for the full academic year. This inaugural program, however, will run until December 2005.

These students have been matched with mentors in the local accounting profession. The aim of the program is to enhance students’ preparation for the realities of working in the accounting and information systems fields. The program is also responding to a desire by the local profession to have more input into preparing graduates from CQU to be ‘ready for work’ in the industry.".

Ms Luck said the Faculty of Business & Law at CQU Mackay has been fortunate to have such wonderful support from members of the accounting profession and of the local business community.

Students will interact with their mentors in a variety of ways with a view to expanding the students' overall awareness of the accounting profession, and to help them explore possible career pathways.

"Students and accounting professionals are to be commended for signing up to the program. It’s a big commitment. Students and their mentors will arrange to be in contact once a month and the type of interactions may include attendance at industry functions, industry training sessions, visits to the mentor’s firm, or one-on-one meetings with the mentor.".
