CQUniversity's Peter Reaburn recently tackled the issue of whether it is possible to overtrain.
He was addressing an audience consisting of the medical, allied health and strength and conditioning staff of Australia's National Rugby League (NRL) teams.

The Department of Health and Human Performance academic had been invited by the NRL to deliver a presentation at the '100 Years of Sports Medicine in Rugby League' event, held alongside the Centenary of Rugby League and the World Cup of Rugby League in Australia.
Associate Professor Reaburn spoke about accounting for adaptation, avoiding fatigue and the calculating the optimum time between bouts of training for well-planned training regimes.
He explained how there was a zone of enhanced performance falling between undertraining and overtraining.
"Overtraining can be caused by inadequate recovery, too much high-intensity training, sudden increases in training load, inadequate nutrition or stressors," he said.
"Good athletes train hard but smart athletes also recover harder."
