Study starts as part of Moranbah's growth management group planning

A study focusing on the social and economic challenges facing Moranbah is set to commence as part of the final stages of planning work by the Moranbah Growth Management Group (MG2).

The study, being undertaken by Central Queensland University and led by Associate Professors John Rolfe and Stewart Lockie, will also consider key relationships between Moranbah and Mackay, particularly on issues such as business and employment interactions.

The study will involve interviews with key community people, Belyando Shire Council, mining companies, and Queensland Government departments about the key impacts and trends in Moranbah.

Moranbah households and businesses will also be surveyed and discussions held with regional business representatives about ways to further develop the local community and business sector.

Analysis of the data collected will be presented to the community in workshops later this year to help identify preferred development strategies for Moranbah.

State Member for Fitzroy, Jim Pearce said the study will provide important information for both MG2 and Belyando Shire Council to consider as part of short, medium and long term planning for Moranbah.

“As we enter the final stages of preparing the Strategic Plan for Moranbah, it will be critical to consult and engage with the community to encourage a strong level of contribution to the outcomes of this planning work.

“The sustainable future for Moranbah will rely on the continued partnership between Council, State Government, mining companies and the community to ensure the objectives of the Strategic Plan are realised over time".

The Moranbah Growth Management Group meets again in October to consider the first draft of the Strategic Plan.
