Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

TV reporter inspires graduates 

CQU Sydney International Campus' August Graduation Ceremony was held on 22 August at the Sydney Town Hall. The guest speaker for the ceremony was well-known television reporter Jeff McMullen.

Mr McMullen has been an ABC foreign correspondent and reporter for the ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ and Nine’s ‘Sixty Minutes’.

PhotoID:293 Mr McMullen’s speech was inspiring and captivating. He spoke from the heart describing his experiences reporting from places across the globe, including the Himalayas, the Amazon, the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica. Throughout his career, Mr McMullen has received numerous awards including the United Nations Media Peace Prize in 1984 and the International Current Affairs Award (Pater) in 1988.

Mr McMullen’s speech was much more than just a description of his travels and experiences as a reporter. He used the occasion to inspire the students and guests to make a difference. He reinforced the idea that we can all contribute to making our world a better place and that we need to think about what we can do on a local level to make a difference.

Mr McMullen has worked on various humanitarian projects. He is committed to supporting the Merry Makers group, The Mirabel Foundation, Youth Insearch Australia, the SANE Australia campaign, the Australian Red Cross and The Ian Thorpe Foundation.

Mr McMullen was awarded an Honorary Degree in Journalism and was presented with this during the Graduation Ceremony. Many staff and students commented on how much they enjoyed and were inspired by Mr McMullen’s speech and his commitment to his work.
