CQU still hopeful despite Simulation Centre funding news

Central Queensland University is still hopeful despite disappointing news about funding for a Simulation Research Development and Training Centre which had been earmarked for the Mackay Campus.
The Mining Industry Skills Centre this week announced that the current Federal Government had decided not to proceed with a $5 million grant for the Centre awarded by the previous Federal Government in October 2007.
The Mining Industry Skills Centre CEO, Derek Hunter, said that although the Skills Centre was disappointed to learn of the Federal Government decision, the team at the Skills Centre is committed to moving ahead with the Simulation Research Development and Training Centre project.
"While we are disappointed with the decision, we remain committed to this project and to simulation training for the resources sector which we see as vital in ensuring a sustainable, skilled workforce for the future."
"We will continue to discuss this project with both the Federal and State Governments and key stakeholders and we look forward to highlighting its importance, not only to Queensland and Mackay but to the future of the entire Australian resources industry," Mr Hunter said.
CQU Vice-Chancellor Professor John Rickard said he was disappointed with news that the federal government would not be providing funds towards the proposed Simulation Research, Development & Training Centre at CQU Mackay.
"This Centre was a significant component in the planned development of CQU Mackay and the promising, mutually beneficial relationship between CQU and the Mining Industry Skills Centre," Professor Rickard said.
"CQU is now working closely with the Mining Industry to develop a strategy to continue to achieve the aims of the aforementioned research centre without the signature building.
"I am confident that other projects under discussion for CQU Mackay will continue to contribute towards the development of the campus and I view this latest development as a temporary setback."
