Memorial scholarship helps turn tragedy into hope

Emotions were on display as supporters of the new John Maxwell Memorial Scholarship gathered in Rockhampton for a formal launch of the initiative this week.
Family members and business associates spoke from the heart.
Only months after the tragedy of John's death in a traffic accident, the annual $5000 scholarship was described as 'potentially life-changing' for recipients.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman said in some cases it might influence a student to pursue a professional career, rather than drop out of study. In other cases, he said, it would mean students could concentrate on their studies rather than seek part-time employment.
The Rock Building Society Ltd Managing Director Derek Lightfoot said Mr Maxwell was a 'people person' known for his generosity, so it was appropriate the scholarship would help young people in the community.
Mr Maxwell's daughters, Sharon and Tracey, said they hoped the scholarship recipients would grasp the opportunity and make something of themselves.
John Maxwell helped establish The Rock Building Society Ltd and was an integral part of the business for 43 years, including serving as its first GM and (later) as Chairman. The leading businessman also practised as an accountant for more than 35 years and was senior partner for Maxwell and Cameron Pty Ltd.
