It's a fair 'CoP' - Indigenisation and Internationalisation explored

'Communities of Practice' (CoPs) are about bringing together people with common interests to share practices and build knowledge. CQUniversity's CoPs cover a diverse range of interests, and are cross-disciplinary, cross-faculty, and cross-campus.
The CoP for Internationalisation of the Learning Experience, which is facilitated by Associate Professor Alison Owens, attempts to provide a culturally-inclusive, internationally-engaged and relevant learning experience for diverse students across campuses of CQUniversity.
The topic for its recent July meeting was 'Theorising/Exploring the Relationship between Indigenisation and Internationalisation in the Australian Curriculum'.
Explaining why the topic was chosen, Assoc Prof Owens stated that: "Internationalisation of education is not a one-size-fits-all process; it emphases global issues and connectedness in a manner that is meaningful and sensitive to local communities, ethnicities, traditions and histories. In this respect, internationalisation of Australian education must incorporate the stories and experiences of Indigenous Australians".
Guest speakers were Prof Bronwyn Fredericks, PVC (Indigenous Engagement) and BMA Chair in Indigenous Engagement; Assoc Prof William Oates, Director of Nulloo Yumbah; and Dr Pamela CroftWarcon, Director, Sandhills Studio.
The guest speakers offered theoretical and practical examples and put forward some suggestions for working with Indigenous peoples, culture and the curriculum. Members of the CoP shared some of their experiences and asked questions. It was a very valuable exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience.
Prof Fredericks stated that "it was great to see staff discussing the concepts of Indigenisation and Internationalisation, teasing out their concerns, sharing problems and deepening their knowledge and expertise".
"I applaud the members of the CoP for asking how Indigenisation relates to Internationalisation? They do and can go together and work towards offering graduates with opportunities to really develop cross-cultural, intercultural and international perspectives for global practice," she concluded.
