Science Quiz Night proclaimed a success

CQU Rockhampton held its final activity for this year's National Science Week on Wednesday August 29 with another successful Science Quiz Night for local high schools.

Six teams nominated, with very close scores in the first round.

In the final round, the team from Rockhampton Grammar School (Jack Piggott, Ellen Bos and James Law) took out first place.  Second place went to the team from Glenmore State High School.

Quiz Master Dr John Parmenter presented a balanced range of science-based questions to individuals and teams so that all teams scored at least 50% and no team scored 100%.

Co-ordinator Dr Bob Newby commented that the level of performance was a credit to both the individuals and the schools.

This year is the 10th anniversary of National Science Week, which is sponsored by the Commonwealth Government.

The aims of National Science Week include inspiring students to pursue careers in science as well as sharing achievements and knowledge with the local community.

CQU Rockhampton has hosted a range of science-related activities during August including the Robotics Competition, Australian Science Festival speaker Dr Jack Bacon, the Titration Competition and the Science Quiz Night.

Other campuses in Gladstone, Bundaberg and Mackay have each had their own activities.

"These events provide a great opportunity for CQU to showcase its science offerings," Dr Newby said.
