New wireless technology to change the way we work

CQU’s wireless network (CQURoam) will be officially launched on Monday March 13.

CQURoam is CQU's wireless network that allows users to access CQU network services with a laptop or mobile device without requiring physical network connections.

Acting Director of CQU’s Information Technology Division John Voss said there are many benefits of wireless access.

“With CQURoam you can gain access to CQU network resources from the convenience of places where wired network is not possible, such as the cafeteria, library or the commercial areas.

“You will also have access to the CQU network with a laptop anywhere where there is coverage and will have seamless access to the internet and the ability to check email.”.

Users need to be aware however that wireless access is not as fast as a wired connection and may not be suitable for large downloading or other network intensive applications.

The wireless access points will be available to both staff and students where you will need to use your domain username and passwords to access the CQU Network, as well as wireless enabled laptop or PDA with WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) drivers.

Initially, there will be 30 access points available, with another 30 expected to be rolled out over the next couple of months.

The installation of CQURoam is a result of a $100,000 ICT Capital project approved by IT Users Group (ITUG).

After this initial deployment of access points, ITD will look at the deployment of additional access points and the participation in EduRoam which allows roving academics to log-in to a wireless network at participating campuses around Australia and the world and gain access to their CQU resources.
