Tenacity Leads to STEPS success

Whilst at first plying his trade as a baker from age 16, and plodding through a number of labouring jobs, Will Butler became ever more convinced that leaving school half-way through grade 11 was not the greatest idea after all, even though he, "... walked straight into a job."

He realised that, advancing his education, would bring just rewards. But, how to start? Easy ... follow Mum's advice, after all, she's in second year of a sociology degree at CQ University.

Now at 22 years of age, Will has completed the STEPS program and will graduate this week. He said he found the process uncomplicated, "I just phoned up the Uni, was put through to STEPS, completed a pretty simple entrance test, and the rest was easy."...  PhotoID:7944, Will Butler

Will recognised he needed to apply himself to study and, eventually found himself in an accelerated program spending up to four days per week at STEPS studying Maths and English, " ... going back over pretty well everything I'd learned at school."  The program also taught Will writing essays, referencing, and use of the new computer system.

He said he's looking forward to rounding out the year with a bit of work, then in March next year, starting his degree in psychology at CQ University, which he expects will cover three to four years. Will said that will be another challenge, especially financially as he's just become a Dad. However, his partner, "... is backing him all the way" and is willing to support him while he studies.

Does all that hard work faze Willl Butler? Not a bit of it!  He said, "When I see something I want, I go for it, and nothing will stop me!"  The next STEPS Information and Assessment Session in Rockhampton will be held on Monday 9th November from 9:00am to 12 noon, in building 32 room G.18
