Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Cyber author entertains with tales of adventures 

Former police detective turned cyber-adventure author, Simon Higgins, recently captivated a group of writing enthusiasts at CQU Mackay. Higgins, a charismatic speaker entertained an audience of around 100 people including high school students, local writers and literary studies students.

PhotoID:88 Giving a lively and energetic presentation, he kept attendees on the edges of their seats with stories of his life as well as providing an invaluable insight into generating ideas for books and the writing process. Literary studies lecturer, Dr Wendy O’Brien said, “Higgins’ cyber-adventure thrillers were primarily aimed at young adults, but could be enjoyed by readers of all ages”. Dr O’Brien organised the lecture to allow writers and lovers of literature to not only understand the processes involved in writing novels, but to also hear from an experienced professional in the industry.

Higgins is currently undertaking a tour of Central and North Queensland and will next week at be speaking at the Charters Towers inaugural literary festival. Simon’s next book, ‘The Stalking Zone’ is due to be released later in the year.
