CQU role in Yeppoon-Fitzroy pipeline

A sod-turning ceremony will be held this Friday (Feb 29) at the Pineapple Patch to mark the beginning of construction of the Yeppoon-Fitzroy pipeline.

This project will end the coastal community's reliance on water from the Sandy and Waterpark Creeks in the Byfield area.

CQU Associate Professor Kerry Walsh was involved in the Livingstone Shire Environmental Reference Group, which was instrumental in convincing planners of the need for a Fitzroy River to Capricorn Coast water pipeline, and in the successful bid for Federal funding.

A characterisation of the environmental issues (hydrology and biology) related to continued reliance on the Waterpark-Sandy system by French intern student Thomas Aubron, supported by recently retired Associate Professor Jurek Piorewicz, and contract biological survey work by the Centre for Environmental management also supported this bid.

The project is a joint federal, state and local government initiative.
