CQU staffers are medal winning masters

CQU researcher Helen Waite is determined to fulfil a high school dream to learn how to hammer throw, following her winning performance in events at the New Zealand Masters Games. Helen won two gold and a silver medals.

PhotoID:551 “The Masters has revived my interest in taking part in hammer as women weren’t allowed to compete in this event when I was in high school,” she said.

“There is a whole group of women who are enjoying events such as the marathon, pole vaulting and triple jump for the first time as masters athletes, because they were only available for men until quite recently.” CQU Nursing and Health Studies Lecturer and javelin competitor Trish Robins also joined 8000 athletes for the three-day event in Wanganui, New Zealand last week. Ms Robins secured a bronze medal in her event. Both will compete again in the Queensland Masters Athletics championships being held in Brisbane on March 15-16.
