Andrew Chiou was recently presented with the Vice-Chancellor's Award for 2005 Teacher of the Year.
Around 25 Infocom staff joined the Vice-Chancellor and Dean Kevin Tickle to congratulate Andrew Chiou on his achievement.
The award was given in recognition of Andrew's exceptional teaching skills and his support for students by creating an exciting and challenging environment that stimulates learning.
Since joining the Faculty in 2002, Andrew has established himself as an advocate of the use of educational robots to teach science, technology and engineering in the University as well as in high schools.
Andrew’s efforts have resulted in new undergraduate and honours robotics courses, development of mobile robotics labs for off-campus students, professional development in educational robotics for high school teachers, and a very successful annual robotics competition for high schools.
His philosophy of teaching is based on the view that a teacher must develop in students an intense desire to learn and grow.
Andrew's infectious enthusiasm for teaching has generated comments from students such as ‘Andrew is one of the best lecturers I ever met’, ‘You showed not only me, but the whole class how the real IT world works, and for that I am grateful’, ‘you’re one of the lecturers that inspired me the most’.
