New degree to create industry teachers

Central Queensland University's new and innovative teaching degree, the Bachelor of Learning Design, has attracted about 50 professionals from different career backgrounds to begin their teaching studies this term.

The Bachelor of Learning Design program has been developed to enable professionals who may have an interest in education, but who do not necessarily wish to obtain teacher registration, obtain a teaching qualification.

The program is aimed at professionals who are involved in the facilitation of the learning of others such as nurse educators, defence force instructors, ambulance, human resources specialists, VET professionals and public and private training providers.

"The program has proved popular due to its flexibility and design to meet the needs of the professional training industry," program adviser Bill Blayney said.

The program is a three-year part-time (or 1 1/2 years full-time) degree offered in the internal/flex mode.

"Students can continue working in their trade or profession while they study.".

An applicant who possesses a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training plus base trade qualifications/paraprofessional training and can demonstrate substantial experience that demonstrates the facility of the learning of others may be eligible to obtain advanced standing for up to nine courses toward the degree. This could nearly halve the length of the program for the applicant.
