Former rugby union club members reunite in Rocky

Past University rugby union players reunited recently to catch up on lost years and celebrate the code they continue to love.

The former players enjoyed cheering on the sidelines of a CQU/Colts match, attended a “Night to Remember” at the Birdcage Bar on-campus, toured local watering holes, held a barbecue lunch and staged an old boys match at Rugby Park.

PhotoID:2019 Joining the celebrations were past club members Peter and Heather Sadler. Three generations of the Sadler family, including Peter’s father Doug, have passed through the club and the club’s three life members all come from this family. Doug was a founder and coach during the club’s early years.

Peter and Heather were the lifeblood of the club for about 12 years, from the mid 70s to the late 80s. Peter worked in the then CIAE administration, where he eventually became the assistant registrar. He later completed an Arts degree majoring in Journalism and Communication and has been the news editor of 2DU radio in Dubbo since 1990.

Also attending the reunion was engineering graduate and four-time paralympian Brendan Burkett. Now a sports science professor and motivational speaker, Brendan’s achievements and contribution to Australian sport are impressive.

PhotoID:2020 Organiser of the reunion Gary Flower said the Sadler and Burkett stories were only two of many stories that were shared during the weekend’s festivities.

“I believe the reunion was a real success. We now have a better history of the Club and a greater sense of continuity and solidarity.”.
