Proms Rehearsals in Full Swing in Rockhampton
Published on 31 May, 2002
One of Australia's most highly-regarded choral conductors, Mr Christopher Kiver, is visiting Central Queensland University this weekend (June 1-2) to work with the specially-formed Rockhampton Community Choir.
The choir of more than 50 voices is preparing for Rockhampton's 3rd annual "Night of the Proms", to be held in the Pilbeam Theatre on Saturday evening, July 27, presented by Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
This year will be Kiver's third and final year as Musical Director for the Proms.
Kiver, who introduced the very popular Night of the Proms to Rockhampton only three years ago, will be moving to the United States to work and study at the University of Michigan, only two days after guest conducting this year's show. Since Kiver introduced the show to Rockhampton two years ago, audience numbers have doubled in size and this year's show is expected to fill the theatre.
English-born and bred, Kiver was brought up with the London Proms, and knows only too well how to arouse and excite a crowd of music lovers with flags in their hands and national pride in their hearts. In keeping with the tradition of the British Proms held every year in London's Royal Albert Hall, the concert will feature the most well-known of musical masterpieces including "Nessun Dorma", Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu", Beethoven's "Song of Joy" plus selections from "Les Miserables", "West Side Story" and "Moulin Rouge". The audience will play a significant part in the performance, when everyone will join the choir in song throughout the program. The choir will be joined by the 40 member Rockhampton Concert Orchestra, and soloists Dimitri Kopanakis, Amanda O'Brien and Linda Maczuga. ENDS For details call Michelle Ilott on 0418 758624
