Uni recognised as quiet achiever

CQUniversity was a finalist in The Rock Building Society Cancer Council Queensland Cancer Champions Awards presented last week.

Recognised as one of the ‘quiet achievers' in the group category, the University has been a long-time supporter of The Cancer Council, most evidently through its long running support of the annual Relay for Life Event.

Relay has been running since 2003, on the Ian Coombes Oval at CQUniversity Rockhampton campus. CQUniversity has provided the use of the grounds as part of an in-kind sponsorship offered to the Cancer Council.

The University's Department of Facilities Management also provides a substantial level of contribution to the Relay for Life in terms of providing assistance in staging the event.

The inaugural Cancer Champions Awards were designed to acknowledge individuals, groups and businesses across the Rockhampton region who have worked tirelessly in the fight against cancer, yet whose contribution has gone largely unrecognised.

The Rock Building Society Managing Director Derek Lightfoot said the awards offered recognition of the great work being done in the community by cancer's unsung heroes.

"It's wonderful to see those who quietly go about their work in the fight against cancer recognised by their local community. They seek no reward for the time and effort they put in, only the satisfaction from working for such a worthy cause."
