Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Mark Vaile included CQU Rockhampton on his itinerary during a visit to the region arranged by the Central Queensland Area Consultative Committee.
After lunch and a briefing with senior University staff, he was given a short guided tour of rail research facilities, including the Centre for Railway Engineering Hi-Lab which was hosting tests using a new $360,000 thermal camera that CQU shares with Monash and VUT.
The camera is able to detect relative changes in surface temperature and has many potential industrial and transport uses, including indicating the effects of braking on the wheel-rail interface.
