Sweet smell of success for wastewater innovator

CQU Plant Sciences PhD researcher Ben Kele has won a Queensland Regional Achievers Award for his development of an on-site wastewater treatment and re-use system.
Mr Kele was one of five award winners recognised for making a difference in their community. He took home $2500, a trophy and was flown to Cairns for the awards dinner last Saturday December 2.
The purpose of the awards was to encourage, recognise, acknowledge and reward the valuable contribution individuals are making throughout Queensland.
Mr Kele’s win has put a spotlight on his patented Kele Effluent and Wastewater Treatment System (KEWT) – a unique system for the treatment of wastewater and effluent. The system was a major outcome from Mr Kele’s Masters thesis research.
KEWT uses a mixture of biological treatment systems and reuses effluent through a self-contained recirculatory form of sub-surface irrigation.
Ben is currently working on a number of CQU projects including the restoration of the Murray Lagoon, sustainable housing developments, wastewater quality from regional hospitals and medical clinics and Queensland water catchment authorities.
