Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Human Movement Science student gains Indigenous scholarship 

Congratulations to CQU Rockhampton Human Movement Science student Sherry-Kaye Savage on being selected for an Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) Tertiary Scholarship of $6000 per annum for a period of 2 years, commencing in 2008.

The IYLP aims to create opportunities for young Indigenous people who have demonstrated academic excellence and potential leadership capability, with the support of both family and community.

Through the IYLP, the $6000 scholarship grant will cover costs including course fees, tuition and educational resources.

In addition to the scholarship component, resources will be provided for the development of leadership skills and other opportunities, such as:

  • Attending leadership courses, gatherings or forums
  • Peer Support and Personal Development Planning
  • Mentor programs
  • Community Work Experience or Work Placement

The IYLP is a national initiative funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

The Foundation for Young Australians has been appointed as the Program Administrator for the IYLP. The Foundation is a dynamic non-profit organisation committed to developing innovative initiatives that support and empower the lives of young Australians aged 12-25. The Foundation commits over $4 million each year to provide opportunities for young people and at least 20% of The Foundation's total funding is committed to programs that benefit Indigenous young people. IYLP will send a project officer to work with Ms Savage to identify leadership opportunities and to develop her individual leadership plan.
