Elena makes most of time on Aussie soil

Leaving her home on the Black Sea coast of Russia, Elena Churilova came to Australia as a single mother with her young son and was grateful to get any job to start with.
She started out working at a truck centre and is now a vegetation officer for the State Government.
Meantime, Elena has completed her Master of Applied Science degree by research, focusing on the use of vermicompost leachate (organic waste broken down into liquid form by worms) as a liquid fertiliser for hydroponically-grown Pak Choi in the tropics.
She says that the effective use of nutrients for food production is one of the world's most important issues.
Having graduated with her Masters recently, Elena plans to continue her PhD research in the same field.
