Maths talk adds up to stimulating event

Around 60 Rockhampton residents this week enjoyed a humorous but informative talk by self-confessed ‘maths bum' Dr Marty Ross, while another 15 people joined in via videoconference from other campuses.

Dr Ross spoke about ‘The Da Vinci Code and Other Nonsense' when he visited CQUniversity Rockhampton this week (July 15).

The visitor told his audience that mathematics occasionally makes its way into popular culture, "usually in a manner which is clumsy, clichéd, or just plain silly".

"Sadly, the blockbuster The Da Vinci Code offers no exception."

Dr Ross describes himself (tongue in cheek) as a ‘mathematical bum who ran away to join the circus'.

"After some controversy involving an elephant, he returned to America to do his PhD on geometric analysis at Stanford University. After a stint at Rice University, he came back to Australia. Since then, he has wandered from Maths Department to Maths Department, aimless but happy," Dr Ross says of himself.
