Solution Found for HECS Students

Central Queensland University has recently had the unenviable task of cancelling the enrolments of a few hundred students who have not complied with a legislative requirement. Those students, as all commencing students enrolling in our programs, or those who are changing their program, are required under the Higher Education Funding Act to submit for their first term a Payment Options Declaration Form and/or a Tax File Number by the 31 March. The students whose enrolments had been cancelled had not provided this information.

Central Queensland University have now found a solution to the problem which does not breach any legislative requirements, and which will enable the affected students to continue their studies this term without any financial penalty.

"The University has not been arbitrary in its original decision on the enrolment cancellations. University staff acted entirely as required under the legislation. However, given the apparent confusion that has existed, and given our absolute commitment to the well-being of our students, we have worked very hard this week, with the support of the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training, to find a solution," said Vice Chancellor Glenice Hancock. "I wish to thank all students who have been affected and staff who have been working on this solution for their patience and goodwill. All affected students will receive a letter explaining the solution and reassuring them about their enrolments for this term," added Professor Hancock.
