'Music and passion were always the fashion'

The memorable chorus from Barry Manilow’s Grammy Award-winning hit song, 'Copacabana', can soon be heard in full as the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music presents 'Barry Manilow’s Copacabana – A New Musical Comedy' at CQU Mackay.

This passionate tale, set amidst the swinging nightclub scene of the 1940s, will thrill audiences with its glamorous costumes and magical choreography, not to mention the superb performances from CQCM students.

PhotoID:2201 Bachelor of Music Theatre students will perform song and dance numbers from the smash hit Broadway show, with lead performances by Kristy Gee as 'Conchita', Cilla Slack as 'Lola' and Wade Colbran-Thomas as 'Stephen', the long-suffering composer/pianist.

As Mackay audiences have come to expect, the standard of performance will be outstanding and the show will be thoroughly entertaining, with music that for the most part, throbs with that Latin beat.

The CQCM is again fortunate to have the talents of seasoned professionals to assist in production. This year, accomplished director and choreographer Jack Webster is working with CQCM staff and students on this exciting show.

Jack’s career includes major roles in 'Man of La Mancha' and 'A Chorus Line' and character roles such as Sergeant of Police in 'Pirates of Penzance'. As well as directing numerous productions, and lecturing for various Music Theatre courses, including NIDA, Jack has also appeared in many Australian TV variety shows and films, most notably, 'Strictly Ballroom'.

PhotoID:2202 According to Jack “the CQCM students have tremendous talent and plenty of enthusiasm and energy which is just what this show needs".

The show opens at 8pm on Thursday August 18, with remaining shows at 8pm on Friday August 19 and 2pm and 8pm on Saturday August 20.

The music is by Barry Manilow, lyrics by Bruce Sussman and Jack Feldman and costumes by Trevor Green, who was also costume designer for the CQCM production of 'Chicago'.
