Mackay's Gordon White library receives a facelift from Education students

Central Queensland University education students and clowns entertained about 60 children and parents at Mackay’s Gordon White Library recently.
The students created a displayed that highlighted the importance of modelled reading and offered advice for encouraging children to read.
CQU Education lecturer Avril Rose said parents could support reading from an early age by fostering a love of literature.
“If parents take children into their lap and create a warm nurturing environment while reading even the youngest children associate reading with pleasure.
“Children also need to see adults model reading for their own pleasure or information. This sends a powerful message to the child that reading is a valuable and worthwhile activity.
“Ideally it would be fantastic if parents found the time to read to them about three stories a day.
Australian author Mem Fox believed this amount of reading would attack literacy problems within one generation.
