After laugh and tumble of Kindysport, students ready to leapfrog into careers

'Watch out or the dinosaur will bite you on the bottom!'
A dozen or so pre-schoolers scream with delight as they run away from CQUniversity students Katelin Balderson and Elisha Steffen ... who then invite them back to have a hit with tennis rackets.

It's all part of the laugh and tumble of Kindysport, which introduces young kids to 12 different sports using age-appropriate equipment and games.
Katelin and Elisha are now in their third year of coaching for the Kindysport program throughout the Rockhampton region. They've been doing so throughout their studies in the Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Sciences.
They have earned some course credit for a report on a local 'Kindysport Olympics' initiative but their motivation for involvement runs much deeper.
"With obesity being such a huge problem among adults, Kindysport is a great way of teaching kids early on that exercise and sports can be fun and not a chore," says Elisha, who is absorbing experience that should support her ambition to become a PE teacher.
Meantime, Katelin already works part-time for the special education program at Rockhampton's Hall School. She says the Kindysport experience is relevant to her future career goals as she's keen to help people with a disability to engage with sports.
