Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

What was a key turning point for you?

"When growing up my parents were always environmentally concious and keen on recycling, so I picked up on that," Zach said.

What are you doing now?

"I've just been working for CEM looking at sustainability initiatives on campus, looking at other unis and where they stand and seeing where CQUni has room to grow with awareness and conservation."

What's coming up in future?

"I'm heading back home to look for a job. This internship gave me credit towards completing my degree in Global Studies and Environmental Politics from Arizona State University."

What do you do outside campus?

"I'm a keen travel photographer to document where I've been."

"I was captain of my high school tennis team."

What advice do you have for young people?

"Be a go-getter and try to apply yourself as much as possible and be more involved."
