Peace scholars study at Rockhampton

PhotoID:4530Three international Peace Scholars are taking in all that CQU and the Rockhampton region have to offer as part of the Peace Scholarship Program.

Danilo Moncada and Mauricio San Martin (pictured with sun glasses) from Chile and Nara Elizabeth Lara Pompa from Mexico have commenced studies at CQU as recipients of the Peace Scholarship Program.

The students were chosen for their commitment to building global peace and understanding through their community, academic and professional achievements.

Danilo and Mauricio are studying English teaching as a foreign language in Chile, and are studying Education courses while at CQU. Nara studies nutrition in Mexico and is studying a range of courses while at CQU.

Studying in Australia through the Peace Scholarship Program is truly an amazing opportunity for the recipients, and the students are encouraged to pass on their experiences and knowledge to their home communities when they return.

Nara said her time in Rockhampton has been good so far although she is still adjusting to living in a different country.

"I have found that there are many differences between here and my home university, especially the form of teaching which is self-directed here," Nara explained.

"My classes also have less students than what I am used to back in Mexico."

Mauricio said he has appreciated the help from the University's international support staff.

"I really appreciate the support that the people in charge of the international students at CQU provided me with, in order to find a place where to live, and to get to know some aspects related to the campus where I study and Rockhampton."

It hasn't been all work and no play for the students though. "I have been able to travel on the weekends to Yeppoon and other beaches that are relatively close to Rockhampton and I plan to get to know more of Queensland and other Australian cities before the term is over," Nara said.

Forty-six students from Cambodia, Chile, India, Indonesia and Mexico received scholarships this month.

Since 2004, the Peace Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to 212 students from 10 countries. The program was initiated following the September 11 attacks and promotes cultural exchange and understanding. The program is supported by many Australian universities and is managed by IDP Education.
