Engineering cadetships to create opportunities for Gladstone industry

Industry centre of excellence, Energy Skills Queensland and CQUniversity Australia are inviting employers to attend a forum on Friday May 13 at our Gladstone Campus. This event is for employers interested in employing engineering cadets, as part of a new program designed to encourage and strengthen a culture of local employment.

Partly funded under the Queensland Government Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation's Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative, the Engineering Cadetship Program is an excellent opportunity for Gladstone employers to provide leadership and support to an engineering cadet while they study towards a Bachelor of Engineering and work within the organisation.

According to CQUniversity's Pathways Facilitator, David Gilmour, the Engineering Cadetship Program is a unique partnership between industry, the employee (cadet) and the University that allows the cadet to be employed and earning a salary, while learning engineering on the job and at University.

"Gladstone employers will have the opportunity to mentor a cadet and mould the development of a highly skilled employee who will get to know the business and industry intimately and have real workplace responsibilities," Mr Gilmour said.

"Immersing students in learning experiences that involve real world contexts can critically contribute towards the cadet's workplace readiness and understanding of their broader role as members of a community and as citizens.

"On completion of the cadetship program, and a Bachelor Degree in Engineering, the Cadet can progress to becoming a fully fledged professional engineer."

The Engineering Cadetship Program is an initiative of CQUniversity Australia and Energy Skills Queensland. Energy Skills Queensland is a leader in industry engagement, and an influential advocate to the government on vocational education and training, skills development and labour market issues for the Queensland energy and telecommunications industries.
