Scholarships offer relief for Mackay students

Recent school leaver and Mirani teenager Kristine Conlan has applied to study a Bachelor of Engineering at CQU Mackay in 2008 and she's hoping to be a recipient of one of seven $4000 CQU Mackay/Hail Creek scholarships.

Kristine first discovered she wanted to be an Engineer when she became involved in a ‘Girls in Technology' workshop at the Mackay campus with Dr Fae Martin, Coordinator of the Engineering Co-op program.

"We built a crane out of paddle pops sticks and it really demonstrated to me how you use maths in Engineering and I love that kind of stuff," said Kristine.

Kristine continued to explore the world of Engineering throughout year 11 and 12.

"At Mirani, we are released from classes on Wednesday to do work experience or do extra courses.  I started to learn more about civil and mechanical engineering," said Kristine.

Kristine discovered the scholarship through the CQU scholarship web page and was drawn to apply.

"My parents are going to help me out with my uni costs so I thought I should do my bit. A $4000 scholarship from CQU Mackay and Hail Creek mine would go a long way," said Kristine.

It's not too late for others to join Kristine in the running for one of seven scholarships and you don't have to enrol in Engineering.

The Scholarships are available for students enrolling in 2008 to study in: Engineering, Nursing, Business, Accounting and IT in Mackay in 2008 and close on the January 30, 2008.

Go to www.cqu.edu.au/scholarships or call Claire Christensen if you would like an application to be sent to you.
