Social justice on agenda at CQU Bundaberg
Published on 24 March, 2004
At Matter Chatter, a monthly event at CQU Bundaberg, a challenge is set to either an artist, staff member or community member to explain why their topic matters.
This Friday (March 26) CQU Bundaberg Equity and Diversity Officer Neil Wex will encourage the group to have a chatter about social justice and answer the question - does social justice matter? Neil will focus on two areas specifically related to social justice, bullying and discrimination. "At a macro level, both of these impact upon our society's capacity to be fair and equitable, whilst in a micro context, they affect an institution's ability to be a secure working environment, which has repercussions for morale and productivity," Neil said.
While Neil admits that psychologists are eminently qualified to explain the personality dynamics underlying bullying and discrimination he believes his own employment experience gives him plenty of 'matter chatter.' "As someone who has spent his entire working life within institutions of one form or another, I'm more interested in examining functional aspects of these two phenomena in the institutional setting." Friday's workshop will address: The definition of bullying in the Queensland context; Identifying when bullying is occurring; Bullying in its various forms; Valid workplace correction; How to prevent bullying; The definition of discrimination in the Queensland context; Discrimination in its various forms; The concept of reasonableness; How to prevent discrimination.
Matter Chatter is open to all and takes place this Friday March 26 at CQU Bundaberg, building 5.from 1pm to 2pm.
