Rob Reed helps make change a science

In his role as a lecturer in Biomedical Sciences and as the Program Director of the College of Sciences, Professor Rob Reed has been the driving force behind changes to the structure of degrees and courses in order to improve student retention, to provide equitable access for flexible mode students, to deliver quality learning and to assist student progression.

Rob has developed and tested teaching strategies built around established principles of good practice and, as a result, his teaching philosophy has clear intent and direction.

His commitment to the concept of integrated learning, based on the construction of a clear and simple curriculum structure with unambiguous links between all learning activities and assessment items, has been of enormous benefit to the online learning activities of students.

Rob's dedication to the principle of encouraging students to take an active role in their own learning experience is evidenced by his role in restructuring the first year of the various science programs to create an integrated first year, where all students of Biology, Chemistry and Biomedical Science now take the same set of courses. These courses integrate the University's graduate attributes into learning activities and assessments.  The assessments are challenging and engaging, rigorous and arguably of greater value than more traditional formats of learning.

Professor Reed's noted respect and support for the development of students as individuals is evidenced by the many strategies he has successfully employed to develop a social networking framework for students, based around a shared interest in course topics.  These include the provision of video-streamed material, discussion boards which enable students to share their views, the co-ordination of the production of tailored library guides and the provision of integrated learning support for students.

His Teaching Excellence award is acknowledgement of the highly-valued contribution Rob has made to learning and teaching at CQUniversity over the past 2 years.
