Science amuses Mackay kids on school holidays

If you and your kids are wondering how to escape boredom over the holidays, then the Siemens Science Experience at Central Queensland University (CQU) Mackay, from January 22 to 24, might be the answer.
It's open to current year 9 students to participate in, and is designed to show kids the fun and practical side of science as well as provide a social activity for the kids on their school holidays.
The kids will be kept busy looking at a variety of subjects such as the diversity of life with local environmental scientist Dr Judith Wake and they'll delve into the interesting world of multi-media with local artist Dr Ashley Holmes.
Last years Siemens Science experience students build a structure from paddle pop sticks with Dr Fae Martin from the Engineering department at CQU Mackay Parents will also get a break in the evenings as ten pin bowling and movies are planned for excursions on both afternoons from 6pm to 9pm.
"This is a fun and educational way to spend 3 days, meet like-minded students and do something a bit different," said CQU Mackay Lecturer and program coordinator Dr Anthony Wheeler.
"All activities stem from programs on offer at CQU Mackay and allow the students to understand the requirements of various professions before they enter Year 10 and face the challenge of subject selection for upper school," said Dr Wheeler.
This program is organised by CQU Mackay, the Science Schools Foundation Inc. and nationally sponsored by Siemens Ltd, IT Skills Hub and Education Qld's Smart State Initiative Spotlight on Science. There is also local support from Rotary.
For registration, go to http://www.scienceexperience.com.au/ (now extended beyond September 28) or call Dr Anthony Wheeler on 4940 7546 for more information.
