Showcase explores ways to maintain enthusiasm of postgraduate researchers

This month's CQU Learning and Teaching Showcase will explore ways to maintain the enthusiasm of postgraduate research students, while ensuring they meet institutional expectations.

A workshop at the Showcase will be facilitated by Dr Bill Maher, Professor of Environmental Chemistry at the University of Canberra (UC).

PhotoID:3720 The workshop topic acknowledges that postgraduates approach their research areas with great enthusiasm and passion, but are confronted by requirements to complete on time, to acquire generic skills and to attend research education programs.

The workshop will explore these tensions from the perspectives of students and supervisors, integrate the perspectives and then discuss the use of personal learning plans at UC in the light of the perspectives.

Professor Maher has worked as a university lecturer and postgraduate supervisor for 25 years.

During this time he has organised many workshops to examine and improve postgraduate supervision and has made a significant contribution to the development of the University of Canberra’s administrative framework for postgraduate research degrees.

Central Queensland University is inviting all educators in the region to its 2007 Learning and Teaching Showcase, 'The Scholarship of Learning and Teaching at CQU – Informing Practice – Sharing Wisdom', on February 22-23, 2007.

The Showcase will be held at CQU Rockhampton, with video links to other regional and Australian International Campuses.

The Showcase will include as keynote speaker Dr Garry Poole from the University of British Columbia, Canada; a student panel discussion; presentations by CQU staff; and a debate on the teaching-research nexus.
