Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Quality outcomes and diversity focus of forum 

Perth, WA, was this year’s location for annual Australian Universities Quality Forum (AUQF) (http://www.auqa.edu.au/auqf/2006/).

Held over 3 days, the focus topic for the forum was 'Quality Outcomes and Diversity'.

Among the 180 delegates who attended, 4 were from CQU:.

- Professor Alex Radloff, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services).

- Ms Joy Spence, Division of Teaching and Learning Services (DTLS).

Topics covered by the 4 keynote speakers included 'Outcomes of Higher Education and Implications for Diversity'; 'Articulation between Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training'; 'Outcomes of Audits and Challenges for the Future' and 'Diversity in Higher Education in the Asia-Pacific region: the Impact of Diversity on International Education and on Training'.

In addition to the keynote speakers, other plenary sessions included a debate on 'Students Surveys and Student Engagement'; a presentation on 'Revised National Protocols for Higher Education Approval Processes'; and a panel discussion, involving CQU’s Professor Radloff, on 'Institutional Diversity and Challenges for Quality Assurance'.

The keynote speakers and plenary were supported by paper and workshop sessions covering a broad range of topics related to the forum topic such as 'Is it an improvement when a Cannibal uses a fork or can ‘Quality’ thinking actually change Outcomes?' and 'Developing Key Performance Indicators: Designing Measurement for Faculty Concerns'. These additional sessions also focussed on quality assurance and enhancement of higher education more generally.

PhotoID:3323 The next forum (AUQF 2007) will be held over July 11 – 13 next year in Hobart, Tasmania. The forum topic will be 'Evolution and Renewal in Quality Assurance'. A call for nominations is expected to be released in November.

Prior to the forum, Mr Window and Professor Radloff attended the Auditor’s meeting on July 5 which addressed topics such as the results of the review of AUQA and the associated action plan, updates on audits of non self-accrediting institutions, Cycle 2 scenarios, issues of audit method, and the roles and responsibilities of audit panel chairs.
